Thoughts on Punch Brothers at Chautauqua in Boulder

The Chautauqua facility was built in 1898 as a community focused on education and culture. So it makes a perfect setting for the Punch Brothers: music with a strong base in classical and bluegrass genres balanced by innovation and embracing of new musical styles (they covered radiohead after all).

Highland Ramblers at Dulcineas - Suboptimal conditions...

This show was pretty interesting. I think it was their first show in a venue as big as Dulcinea's (which can probably hold 200 people but which probably had about 75-100 people or so). The last show was at the [Denver RooBar](http://www.denverroobar.com) and they didn't have the proper sound equipment to really be heard over the bar noise. Here at Dulcineas, the situation was better but not by much.

This was a pretty crazy night. My overall impression is that putting a "festival" style event into an Opera House is a flawed concept and that they would be better off either shrinking the performer list or holding it at a more typical festival venue with a more typical festival feeling. Either Swallow Hill or the artists or Ellie Caulkins doesn't allow photos at their shows, so nothing new on the Photo Stream.

Next, I'll break it down artist by artist.

E-123 - very back of the first level. The venue is packed in tight layers, so all seats are "good"

I have mixed feelings on this concert.

Punch Brothers Kick Ass

On the one hand, the music was hot. Not just hot, but hot. They played all sorts of great things including some old school music by Bach and Mozart. They brought in Sometymes Why on a few songs, which was suitably amazing, including a part where Gabe Witcher sang a bass line since Paul Kowert was gone for the night. Sheriff Uncle Bob, the Sheriff of Good Times, lead the group on two songs, and Pickle's Song was amazing, as expected.

we stood at the back at first, then got seats _right_up_front_.

This was my first concert at the gardens. I called in and the ticket lady suggested I get there at 5:00. I got there at 4:45 to meet Ezra (arrival time 4:20) who was still pretty far back in line. Depending on the artist, I suggest getting there at something more like 3:00 or so if you really want good seats. Lots of folks make a day out of it with a picnic and games in line.
