Impressed by music, unimpressed with the sound - Kottke at Botanic Gardens

Review of Leo Kottke, Loudon Wainwright III at Denver Botanic Gardens - Denver, CO

This was my first concert at the gardens. I called in and the ticket lady suggested I get there at 5:00. I got there at 4:45 to meet Ezra (arrival time 4:20) who was still pretty far back in line. Depending on the artist, I suggest getting there at something more like 3:00 or so if you really want good seats. Lots of folks make a day out of it with a picnic and games in line.

The music was amazing. I expected nothing less, but Kottke still impressed me with his skills and personality. Unfortunately the sound was muddy. Particularly low notes just sounded like the speakers had torn cones or popcorn in them or something - it was a little rough.

So, while I'm not much of a concert person I still enjoyed this concert. My rating of 4 reflects the fact that the set was relatively short and the sound quality was not as good as it could be. But really, Kottke's performance was totally a 5.

UPDATE: Kottke was really quiet. I think out of the first three songs the only thing he said was "can I get a little more subwoofer?". At the end he was talking a LOT. Perhaps the funniest thing he said was - after a long story - "...you can take that or leave that. And if I were you I'd leave it."

Great stuff.
